The Travel Slut Diaries: Return To Living (Pt. 1)

The last time I went out-of-town for a vacay was back in late October 2019, at the time of my birthday. I had plans on where to go for next year’s birthday, and then some thing called Covid happened and took those plans and ruined them like they were human lungs. Sure, I could’ve made like an attention-starved celebrity and traveled and partied during the worst of the pandemic last year. But not only could I not afford a trip then (all my money went to boring-ass bills), I wasn’t that much of a selfish asshole to take a trip. (I’m not gonna fix that part, either.)

It’s now April May 2021. (I wrote most of this over a week ago but didn’t finish until now.) I’m fully vaccinated and can feel the 5G flow through me, and that stimulus check helped put a little more change in my pocket. What’s a chick with some extra money to do? OK, some of it went to Sephora’s semi-annual sale a few weeks ago, but I had to nurture the travel slut in me that itched to getaway again. I took a week off from work and the beaches of Santa Cruz were calling me.

Although I don’t know why they called me this time of the year. Much like SF in the summer, it was cold and cloudy. And, of course, the boardwalk was closed. It’s weird to see all those rides and the arcades shuttered. Couple that with the weather and it was not the most lively picture. But I still made the most of my Santa Cruz visit. I wanted to; I haven’t been there in *checks photo archive* four years?!?!

Who needs thrill rides when you can have a beach party with seagulls instead?

Out on the wharf. Above is the farthest out you can get on the wharf.

Feisty sea lions! (Excuse the quality of some of these pics. The camera on my cell phone is no Leica.)

The boardwalk from the wharf after sunset.

Not pictured (since I didn’t take any pics of the following): downtown SC, Roux Dat Cajun Creole in downtown where I bought my lunch and dinner (their jambalaya is the tits), and the weed shop where I got a great deal for some edibles.

More after the jump!

Confession: I did not lodge in Santa Cruz during my getaway. I stayed in Mountain View instead, which was only a 35 minute drive from SC. My Hotwire deal was better there, and my hotel was picturesque…

…from the outside. Interior was fine for the price, but then I found this object of ewww after accidentally dropping something behind the microwave.

LMAO at “Dietary Supplement”. Although it’s not really a lie–you burn calories from hittin’ skins, so they’re technically right! (Yes, I threw that shit away. It was used.)

When I checked out, I went over to a breakfast joint in Campbell called Stacks. It would be my first time eating at a restaurant, and, since I’m still leery over eating indoors, I opted for outdoor dining.

With a dish like this Strawberry Banana French Toast with whipped cream and Nutella jizz, I put my vaccinations to the test by devouring this baby mask-down (how else am I gonna eat?) around others. I still got my sense of taste and smell as I type this, so I guess I’m good.

My check-out day was mostly spent in the San Jose area. I don’t live far from SJ these days, but I haven’t had time to visit my favorite SJ hot spots in ages. I used to frequent Westfield Santa Clara when I was in the area, but I haven’t done so in over a year. That mall also recently got renovated, and it’s now more fancy-looking. I walked around the place with my pinky up.

Part of the new wing of the mall. It’s more grand in person.

The new wing also had this interactive art exhibit where patrons can actually do their own doodles on reversible-sequin fabric (yep, the same fabric you see on kids’ throw pillows).

wall of sequins!

I kept my messaging simple and meaningful.

I spent minutes in an upscale shopping mall doing sequined graffiti that only Michael Scott would approve. No, I’m not gonna look at my life and my choices.

Speaking of art, I was able to score some edible art via the new Psycho Donuts stand. I have enjoyed their donuts since discovering them nine years ago. They do make works of art! Dunkin could never.

I always get the Marla (a Butterfinger and peanut butter-topped bar) and Mello Submarine (a ring topped with Rice Krispies and marshmallow) when I go to PD. After the big-ass breakfast I had that day, my pancreas that afternoon wanted to go on strike.

After some more shop-hopping, I gave myself a treat that I couldn’t do in cloudy Santa Cruz: watch the sunset from the SJ hills. The drive up there is not for the novice, but the views from there are simply amazeballs.

That horse got bomb-ass real estate.

In duh news, after returning to work last week, I wanna go back on vacay.

There’s a Part Two to this, so in the meantime, enjoy this adorable furball spotted in the windows of Recycle Bookstore West in downtown Campbell. (Side note: I miss having a cat!)
